Who We Are

Crayons2Calculators’ history is rooted in education. Our programs were originally launched by Duke University students in the Entrepreneurial Leadership Program as they were challenged to tackle pressing social issues prevalent in the greater Durham community. A vision led by college students turned into a thriving nonprofit fulfilling a service gap experienced by many local students, teachers, and families.

We officially received our nonprofit status in 2006 shortly after our inaugural school supply give away, then hired our first Executive Director in 2007. Our success over the last thirteen years has continued to exponentially grow. We now distribute more than $100,000 annually to the most under-resourced schools in Durham. Our mission is more than providing essential school supplies, we empower students and teachers to reach their greatest potential.

What We Do

Mission

We directly equip Durham Public School teachers with the classroom supplies they need to help reduce barriers to success for every Durham Public School student.

Vision

We envision a future where supplies are readily available in all classrooms in Durham Public Schools to support students’ learning, growth, and success.

Core Values

Our work is guided by:

Access: basic school supplies should be available year-round for all students

Equity: lack of school supplies should never be a barrier to the learning experience

Empowerment: teachers are professional who should be provided with what they need to excel at their job

Community: together with support of Durham and surrounding areas we can meet build a thriving Durham Public School System

Service: hard-working, passionate volunteers and the community can make a positive impact on Durham Public School teachers and students
