The Students to Scholars Board of Directors is seeking volunteers with diverse skills and perspectives to serve on one of our board committees. We deeply value the time, ideas, and input of our committee members and are excited to welcome new voices to help shape our work.

Board Committees Include:

·       Governance: Legal support, strategic planning, board recruitment

·       Finance & Fundraising: Budgeting, grant strategy, donor engagement

·       Programs: Reviewing and developing student support programs

What to Expect

·       Meetings are virtual, once a month

·       Each meeting lasts about one hour

·       The commitment runs from September through June

·       All work is remote

Students to Scholars is seeking Duke faculty, staff, and graduate students to serve as guest speakers for our virtual monthly Success and Support Event, designed for bright and ambitious 6th through 8th graders in our program.

These events aim to inspire students to pursue college and follow their dreams by connecting them with high-achieving professionals from a wide range of backgrounds and careers.

Event Details

When: Third Tuesday of each month

Time: 7:00 to 7:45 PM Eastern Time

Where: Zoom

Format: Moderated conversation with students

As a guest speaker, you will spend about 20 to 25 minutes sharing your journey, experiences, and insights. Topics can include your educational path, your current job, or another theme of your choice. The tone is informal and conversational, with plenty of opportunities for student questions.

There is no need for slides or a formal presentation. We are looking for people who are excited to speak with middle school students and share their stories in an engaging and supportive environment.

If you are passionate about mentorship and helping students see what is possible, this is a meaningful way to get involved with a low time commitment.

Do you love helping kids with homework? Are you excited about making a real difference in a child’s academic progress?

Students to Scholars is seeking dedicated Academic Coaches to work one-on-one with 3rd through 5th grade students who need extra support in reading and/or math.

What Academic Coaches Do

Meet with a student once per week

Work in-person or virtually

Focus on reading, math, or both

Sessions are one-on-one and last about one hour

In-person sessions typically take place at one of the Durham Boys and Girls Clubs between 3:30 and 5:30 PM on weekdays. We’ll match you with a student and provide guidance to help you succeed.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to empower young learners and help them gain the confidence and skills they need to thrive in school.
