Volunteer: Volunteer Tutor

The Emily Krzyzewski Center, a nonprofit organization in Durham, North Carolina, implements four distinct programs designed to build on the academic, career, and leadership potential of students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Collectively, our programs serve students from elementary school through college and equip them with the skills necessary to successfully complete higher education, connect to promising careers, and become agents of change within their communities.

Scholars to College is a free, cohort-model college readiness program serving high school students in grades 9-12. Scholars to College Subject Area Tutors work with our high school students in a one-on-one setting in a variety of subjects, with the greatest need in math and the sciences. Volunteers in this role have expertise in a subject area relevant to high school coursework and experience tutoring or teaching. The time commitment is generally one hour per week during after-school or early evening hours, depending on student schedules. Anyone interested in serving as a volunteer subject area tutor should contact our team at scholarstocollege@emilyk.org. Volunteer: Volunteer Support Team member

Bike Durham relies on volunteers to deliver quality programming and events as we support our community to better understand issues around sustainable transportation.  We are creating a small team of folks to create and support a strong volunteer program so that our volunteers have a positive and enjoyable experience.

This is a great position if you enjoy chatting with prospective volunteers to find the perfect first placement among our volunteer opportunities.  If you love to organize who is doing what and when and ensuring that volunteers have the materials and information they need then you will love being part of this team.  Excited to see a volunteer grow their responsibility within the organization, especially teens and college students who are looking to deepen their skills and make connections in the community - this position is your gig!

Volunteer management is a wonderful career, generally found within larger nonprofits - being part of the team could be just the experience you need to to determine if this might be a good career choice for you.

Volunteer: Help Set up Refugee Housing

We need volunteers to gather new-home essentials like bed sheets, cleaning supplies, and cookware so that way refugees have a place to call home. We have many families arriving and need your help to get their homes ready! Many of our house set ups are taking place in Burlington, which is about 30 minutes from Durham.

After you apply, we will add you to a list of home supply volunteers. Then we will reach out to see if you are available to help in our next set up! We will then connect you with 1-2 other volunteers who are also available to help with the set up. We will probably need your help within two-three weeks of signing up, however if you are not available for a particular set up no worries, there will be more!

We will give your group a three-day timeframe to complete the set up. The timeframe is usually from Friday-Monday afternoons. All items must be placed in the unit by the deadline. You will receive instructions on how to access the apartment and a list specific to the family you will be helping.

Volunteer: Volunteers (Puzzling with Durham Rescue Mission)

Puzzles with Purpose is looking for volunteers in the community. Each week we visit both Durham Rescue mission centers, (Women's and Children's Center & Men's Center)  and spend time puzzling with the residents. This is important because it keeps them accountable in completing their puzzles and also provides them with positive fellowship within the community. We typically spend about an hour at the facility. If you interested in helping or learning more,  please contact us via email.

Volunteer: ACRA Facebook Funding Campaign – Remote

ACRA has a one-person staff that keeps busy with the day to day operations of our two housing facilities, Fitts-Powell Apartments and New Blevins both located in South Durham.  There is little time for development and capacity building.

Our desire and goals are to attract a new generation of volunteers and donors to our organization by using social media.  We would like to share some compelling stories from our clients, staff, and board members, letting the Durham community know that we’re here, thriving and they can help.  Everything can be done remotely utilizing email, phone and zoom meetings.

Thanks for your interest.

Volunteer: Dog Foster (Remote)

When you volunteer with Hope Animal Rescue, you’re giving the animals one of the greatest gifts of all — your time. Whether you’re spending one-on-one time with the animals, helping out at events or assisting in some other way, you’re helping the animals to find their forever families.

A foster parent provides a safe and loving environment for a dog until adoption. In addition to affection, foster families provide basic care such as food, water and shelter. Hope Animal Rescue pays for all vetting and preventatives, and can provide crates, toys and food when needed. Foster parents are expected to teach basic house manners such as crate, leash and house training. It is helpful if foster families can transport adoptable dogs to events or vet visits, but is not required.

To learn more about fostering and get started as a foster volunteer, submit your interest form at https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/foster/HNC/Dog.

Volunteer: Volunteer to Tutor at Student U

Student U is a community organization that works to empower and equip first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators.  During the school year, a portion of this work is through our tutoring program for our middle and high school students.  Generally, tutoring takes place at the W.G. Pearson Center, daily, during our Year-Round Program for our middle school students and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for our high school students.  Due to COVID-19, we will be hosting tutoring on a virtual platform throughout the fall semester.  Tutoring will occur Monday-Thursday, from 3:00pm-8:00pm for our middle and high school students.  Wednesdays and Fridays will be flexible workdays so the tutoring times will vary.  All DPS students are participating in virtual learning with their school so it is imperative that we have volunteers throughout the week during all of the allotted times.  We are asking volunteers to commit to tutoring at least one day per week for the semester.  Tutoring will be organized using Zoom breakout rooms and students will have the option to work 1-on-1 with a tutor, in a small group session, and/or with peer groups.  The main goal for our volunteer tutors is to help our students both complete and understand their homework.

Virtual tutoring will begin on Monday, August 31st.  If you are still interested in supporting Student U students with your service of time and skills, please complete our Volunteer Tutor Survey as soon as possible and expect to hear from our Volunteer Coordinator within 48 hours after completion.  If you have any specific questions, please contact Michelle Norwood at michelle.norwood@studentudurham.org.  We look forward to working with you!
