Who We Are

ACRA was founded in 1987 by six individuals who wanted to provide housing for individuals who were living their final weeks and days with AIDS. It was essential to the founders that clients receive excellent care in a safe and wholesome environment. The Blevins House was opened in 1988 and was the first Family Care Home for PLHIV in the South. ACRA continued to develop housing, in 1994 Fitts-Powell Apartments became the first HUD Subsidized complex with a preference for PLHIV.

Our mission is to provide diverse housing options, compassionate care, and access to collaborative support services for persons living with disabilities and HIV/AIDS so they can thrive in the community.

What We Do

With greatly improved treatments for HIV, clients are living longer and healthier lives, but the need for affordable housing is as critical. ACRA continues to operate two housing programs, Blevins II and Fitts-Powell Apartments. Both facilities are HUD-subsidized which means the rent is based on the resident's income. The communities have changed, however, the compassion to see PLHIV and the disabled thrive in Durham has not. We provide limited support with one full-time staff person. ACRA is determined to build capacity and sustainability to extend its reach with services, support, and housing.
