Who We Are

Urban Community AgriNomics' (UCAN) mission is to improve the health and wellness of our community. We provide programming and education on healthy lifestyles, seed-to-table food preparation and preservation, hands-on STEAM and agriculture.  We empower families and individuals with access to resources to grow their own healthy food using sustainable practices in a supportive environment.

What We Do

UCAN is reclaiming an old neglected farmstead into a Community Agriculture Center starting with the Catawba Trail Farm. Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN) mission is to improve the health and wellness of our community. We provide programming and education on healthy lifestyles, see-to-table food preparation and preservation, hands-on STEAM and agriculture. In addition to addressing access, food insecurity, academic success and building human equity, we are also engaged in researching the African American Slave history on this once slave planation.

Some specific areas of programming includes our CTF Community Garden where we teach youth and adults to grown their own fresh vegetables; our apiary where we teach and will benefit from having bees; education on the benefits and support of native pollinators; non traditional farming, populating mushroom logs; watershed appreciation, etc.

UCAN and the Catawba Trail Farm are actively in the local food insecurity movement of Durham County. We participate in gleanings and host a monthly Food Distribution of NC grown produce which serves and average of 200 families or 450 individuals per month.
